ABUJA – The World Health Organization (WHO) has prequalified the R21/Matrix-M malaria vaccine, developed by Oxford University and manufactured by Serum Institute of India, for the prevention of malaria in children.
This marks the second malaria vaccine to receive prequalification from the WHO, following the RTS, S/AS01 vaccine. Both vaccines have demonstrated safety and efficacy in clinical trials.
The prequalification enables larger access to vaccines and is a prerequisite for procurement by UNICEF and funding support for deployment by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance.
Malaria remains a significant public health risk, especially in the African Region, where nearly half a million children die from the disease each year.
