The Chairman, women rights protection alternative WRAPA,Alhaji Muhammad Nasiru Kanya, has said that the NGO has secured the prosecution and convictions of at least 50 rapists in two special Courts established to try such cases of rape and other gender based violence in the state.
According to him, the decision to skip conventional courts in the cases of rape and gender based or domestic violence cases is to put a stop to delayed judgements
from conventional courts which allow some parents of victims or those of the offenders to seek out of court settlement to kill the cases hence the reason we got the backing of the state government for the establishments of two special Courts in Birnin Kebbi and Jega .
He explained that to further boost their operations, the wife of Kebbi governor, Zainab Nasare has opened a victims rehabilitation and treatment center in Jega town with operational vehicles to cover the 21 local governments in the state.
The centre designed to cater for the health needs of rape and gender based violence victims is equipped with qualified doctors and nurses on 24hrs duties , while urging victims and parents to speak up he assured of unrelenting efforts to stem the scourge of rape and domestic violence in the state.
