In a statement released on 5 December, 2025, the Chairman of the Yobe State Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Barr. Joel Duku, lauded Yobe State Governor Dr. Mai Mala Buni for his steadfast commitment to sports development in Yobe and across Nigeria.
The Governor recently approved a comprehensive refurbishment of the ‘August 27 Stadium’ in Damaturu, a project that is now nearing completion and is set to transform the venue into a state‑of‑the‑art facility capable of hosting continental and inter‑continental events.
According to Barr. Duku, the upgrades—including a new VIP stand, roofing of the popular side, a presidential lounge, an indoor sports complex, and an iconic fence and gate have turned the stadium into a landmark that enhances the aesthetic appeal of Damaturu, the state capital.
“These developments will further boost the morale of the players” the statement continued, emphasizing that the revamped stadium will boost sports excellence, attract visitors, and stimulate the local economy.
SWAN commended Governor Buni’s vision and urged continued investment in sports infrastructure to nurture talent and promote national pride.
