MetrSixteen inmates have escaped detention from the Medium Security Keffi Custodial Centre (new), Nasarawa State.

The Guardian gathered that the incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, 12th August 2025.

According to a statement made public by the National Spokesman of the Service, Abubakar Umar, the escape occurred after inmates breached facility security, attacking personnel on duty and enabling the sixteen inmates to make their escape.

During the incident, five staff members sustained injuries, with two reported in serious condition and receiving urgent medical care at a government health facility.

So far, seven of the escaped inmates have been recaptured and returned to custody, he stated.

Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, visited the facility and announced a comprehensive investigation into the escape.

He warned that “no staff will be spared if found culpable,” noting the seriousness of the situation.

He also directed an immediate search to recapture the remaining fleeing inmates in collaboration with sister security agencies.

Nwakuche urged the public to remain calm and vigilant, advising them to report any suspicious movements or sightings of the escaped inmates to the nearest security formation.

“While preliminary investigations are underway to clarify the circumstances of the escape, the Service reassures the public of its commitment to safety and the security of all custodial facilities across the nation,” it added.
