The Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Ayodele Sonubi, on Friday, officially retired from active service after 33 years, receiving encomium from dignitaries, including the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, the State Governor, Seyi Makinde, and many others.
The ceremony was held at the state Police headquarters, Eleyele, in Ibadan, the state capital.
Egbetokun, who was represented by the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone II, Fayoade Adegoke, showed encomium on Sonubi “as a law enforcement strategist and dedicated professional.”
He described “retirement as a time to reflect on years of sacrifice” and commended Sonubi’s remarkable service and contributions to security in the state and Nigeria as a whole.
In his goodwill message, Makinde, represented by his Special Adviser on Security Matters, CP Fatai Owoseni (retd.), described Sonubi “as a thoroughbred professional with integrity” and thanked him for his dedicated service to the state as CP.
He, therefore, urged junior officers in the Nigerian Police to emulate him to attain such a glowing and well-decorated career.
Makinde stressed that as he bows out of service, “his legacy of professionalism, dedication, and inter-agency collaboration remains a benchmark in law enforcement in the state.”
In his remarks, the Garrison Commander of the 2 Division, Nigerian Army, Brigadier General H. I. Dasuki, highlighted the robust collaboration between the Nigerian Army and the state command under Sonubi’s leadership, assuring that this partnership would continue.
Also speaking, the National President of the Police Community Relations Committee, Aramide Olaniyan, described Sonubi “as a trusted friend and a pillar of support.”
The President-General of the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes, Niyi Ajewole, who spoke on behalf of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Olakulehin Owolabi, applauded Sonubi’s commitment to security, noting his swift response to distress calls as commendable in the entrenchment of community policing.
In his farewell remarks, Sonubi reflected on the challenges he faced throughout his 33-year career in the service, acknowledging the impact of his demanding job on his personal and family life but expressing gratitude for ending his service on a note of joy and accomplishment.
Sonubi extended heartfelt appreciation to his wife, Monisola Sonubi, for her unwavering support throughout his career, assuring his family of his “full attention in retirement.”
Among the dignitaries at the occasion were the state Head of Service, Olubunmi Oni, the Otun Balogun of Ibadan, High Chief Kolawole and a host of others.
