Leading Telecommunication companies have written an open letter to the UK, EU, and NATO, citing their worries that Russia might be able to cause internet connection blackouts around the world by sabotaging undersea cables.
The companies, Vodafone, O2 owner Telefonica, Orange, among others expressed their fears over “defenseless” cables, indicating that any such interference by the Kremlin would have serious repercussions, affecting communications and power infrastructure globally.
According to the letter, “Subsea cable security must be a cornerstone of broader infrastructure protection efforts. By acting now, we can safeguard the networks that underpin our shared future.”
Sabotage attacks have already taken place in the Baltic Sea, with defense intelligence sources indicating that Russia was behind those attempts. However, Moscow has denied the allegations.
Indeed, undersea data cables have played a significant role in the history of telecommunications. Yet, they continue to be one of the most vulnerable infrastructural components of global trade.
As increasing demands for data exchange and the global reliance on digital infrastructure continue to expand, understanding these cables as critical assets also provides interesting insight into geopolitical tensions and international dynamics.
