The Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Tourism and Culture, Idris Aregbe, has mourned veteran Nollywood actor Olu Jacobs, describing him as a towering figure whose contributions helped shape Nigeria’s film and theatre industry.
Aregbe, in a statement issued on Wednesday following the announcement of Jacobs’ death by his family, described the late actor as the “Lion of Lufodo, recalling his commanding voice, presence, and grace on stage and screen.
“When the lion rests, the forest remembers his roar,” Aregbe said, reflecting on the legacy left behind by the celebrated actor.
He described Jacobs as more than an actor, saying he defined roles, set standards, built institutions and inspired generations of young performers.
“Some actors play roles. Olu Jacobs defined them, and that is what has set him apart from others,” he said.
According to Aregbe, Jacobs’ career stretched from the stages of London to the heart of Nollywood, where he represented Nigeria with dignity and distinction.
He said young actors who aspire to make an impact in the industry are following a path partly paved by Jacobs’ contributions.
“Every young actor who dares to dream big walks a road he paved,” Aregbe said.
The Lagos State Government aide also mourned the loss on behalf of the cultural community, stressing that Jacobs’ death would be felt far beyond the entertainment industry.
“Lagos mourns. The culture mourns. Africa mourns,” he stated.
Describing Jacobs as a great man whose influence would endure beyond his lifetime, Aregbe added: “Great men do not die. They simply become the ground on which others stand.”
He also expressed his condolences to Jacobs’ wife and fellow acting icon, Joke Silva, whom he affectionately described as “our mother and aunty.”
Aregbe prayed that God would grant Silva and the entire Jacobs family strength and comfort during the period of mourning.
